Misunderstood
genius, entertainer, advertiser, seer,
guru, leader of men, sporter of complicated
haircuts. and purveyor of some of the
finest pearls of footballing wisdom.
"We
changed to a back four and went 4-4-3
and after that 20-minute period we grew
in our game."
With a formation like that, it must
have felt like they had an extra man.
“I
think in international football you
have to be able to handle the ball.”
And with brilliant tactical gambits
like this up his sleeve, Glenn’s
teams could hardly fail.
“When
a player gets to 30, so does his body.”
Glenn never really got credit for this
discovery, and yet every player and
coach takes it for granted nowadays.
"Robert
Lee was able to do some running on his
groin for the first time."
It was innovative, though admittedly
painful, rehabilitation programmes like
this that allowed Glenn to lead his
teams to unprecedented success.
“He
was a player that hasn't had to use
his legs even when he was nineteen years
of age because his first two yards were
in his head.”
That’s it in a nutshell.
“Ilie
has a deception of pace.”
Glenn has a deception of linguistic
brilliance.
"International
football is one clog further up the
football ladder."
A clever allusion to an upcoming game
against the Dutch, no doubt.
Of course, it’s
not just about football for Glenn. He
works theological insight into every
facet of his life.
“His
tackle was definitely pre-ordained.”
Here Glenn links a delicate doctrinal
argument to an incident in a football
match.
“They
were still in the dressing room when
they came out for the second half.”
And only Glenn could spot an opposing
team that, like God, can be in two places
at once.
“I
do not believe that. In this moment
in time, if that changes in years to
come I don't know, but what happens
here today and changes as we go along
that is part of life's learning and
part of your inner beliefs.”
Thankfully, a Hoddle disciple committed
this utterance to scripture.
“We
threw caution to the wind and came back
from the dead. Well, it is Easter Monday.”
Jesus, John the Baptist-like, merely
prefigured the true Resurrection, which
occurred during half time at a Spurs
game.
“Look
at Jesus. He was a normal run of the
mill sort of guy who had a genuine gift,
just as Eileen has.”
Glenn puts 2000 years of Christianity
into perspective.
Of course, a great theological
mind is likely to be a great philosophical
mind too.
"It's
not a night for this or that."
Nor indeed for these or those.
“I
have a number of alternatives, and each
one gives me something different.”
The kind of alternatives we’d
all like to have.
"75%
of what happens to Paul Gascoigne in
his life is fiction.”
Hopefully Glenn phoned Gazza at some
stage to let him know, although the
danger would be that it would have proved
to be one of the 75% of Gazza phone
calls that were fictional.
"With
hindsight, it's easy to look at it with
hindsight."
Only Glenn had the foresight to see
this.
“The
minute's silence was immaculate, I have
never heard a minute's silence like
that."
What finely honed senses he has.
